EW Unveils First Photos from The Avengers

I can’t say I’m overly excited about Marvel’s superhero team-up flick The Avengers as of yet, partially because I don’t want to set any high expectations, but also because, well, so far there just hasn’t been much to get excited about. The short teaser trailer that was tacked on to the end of Captain America: The First Avenger a couple of months ago was extremely underwhelming, and now the first batch of “official” photos to debut in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly are also somewhat lacklustre. We do get a closer look at Chris Evans’ new outfit, and we also get to see Mark Ruffalo looking hilariously intense as Bruce Banner, but other than that, it’s just a lot of dull green screen stuff. Is this all it takes to get people hyped for The Avengers? Check out the photos after the jump and see what you think.

I think the costumes and the props all look very cool. Based on the Marvel films that I have seen this year I am fairly confident of an at least “ok” Avengers movie. I think these people know what they’re doing by this point and films like Captain America and X-Men: First Class prove that point.

If Thor and Captain America had flopped I would be really dubious about things right now, but they both more or less exceeded my expectations for superhero movies, OR at least met my expectations, so that is good enough for me.

I am pretty sure that the Avengers movie will be more about characterization then anything else, so I’m not really desperately searching for set photos or hints about special effects or CGI. This film is going to be about story and script and how these guys work and get along together, or don’t get along.

If people watch this movie and get sucked into the story the costumes and effects will just enhance an already good formula.

After being drawn into the Buffy and Angel tv series and loving both shows, I would say Joss Whedon has earned some slack and some faith. If the movie comes out and it’s awful, then everyone can criticize to their heart’s content.

that cover looks like shit. Thor looks like some fucking pornstar but I´m looking forward to the movie. Joss Whedon rules.

  • Matt

Scarlet Johanson’s head is extremely big compared to her body and Mark Ruffalo looks like a combination of Wolverine and someone from Twilight. Awful poster.

  • Bob Spunch

@patrik, what kind of porn are you watching…? I don’t think I want to know. At any rate, I agree, the cover looks horrible. I couldn’t even recognize Mark Ruffalo until Matt pointed it out.

  • kyri

    looks like shit.
Hulk is thrown out of the picture?

  • Juan

    Zoolander as Hulk?

  • I have to admit I am a sucker for a superhero movie, but I’m not sure about this one yet.

I loved the Iron Man films and was surprised how much I enjoyed Captain America, but I wasn’t compelled to go and see Thor… And is it wrong that I am so disheartened by yet another Hulk movie? I mean come on! (Though in fairness it’s not gonna be as bad as the Eric Bana one!)

    Fingers crossed I suppose!

Everyone except Thor looks photoshoped onto the body.

  • indianamcclain

Ha! Captain America looks like a robot on the cover.

  • Kasper

Is it just me or does Mark Ruffalo look like an idiot?

  • patrik

it´s not just you Kasper. I kinda think they challenged eachother to do the most stupid look or something.

  • Ruffalo owes Ben Stiller a few bucks for borrowing his BLUE STEEL gaze.

  • kyri

That’s not BLUE STEEL dummy, it’s MAGNUM!
