When the line-up for next year’s Sundance Film Festival was first announced a couple of weeks ago, there weren’t a ton of films that really stood out to me. Of course, that doesn’t really mean much, since Sundance tends to launch the careers up and coming filmmakers that are going to be the next big thing before anyone has actually heard of them. However, as time goes on, we are starting to see some pretty interesting little movies coming out of the woodwork, including this potential gem from the short film program. An intriguing picture hit the web last week from a short film called “Fight For Your Right Revisited”, and as you can see, it features Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride playing the Beastie Boys circa 1986. The director of this short film? None other than Adam Yauch, better known as MCA of the Beastie Boys.
Not much is known about the short film, but it appears to be a sequel of sorts to the video for their first hit single “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)”. The only synopsis available reads simply, “After the boys leave the party.” The short film’s all-star cast also supposedly includes Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Jack Black, and it certainly seems to be a parody of the Beastie Boys by the Beastie Boys themselves. They have distanced themselves from their obnoxious early years as they became more mature and politically-minded, so it could be interesting to see how they look back on it now.
Adam Yauch has directed a number of the band’s videos over the years and also directed their fan-made concert film Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That! as well as the feature-length basketball documentary Gunnin’ for That #1 Spot. He also co-founded the film distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories. Last year he was diagnosed with cancer, which delayed the release of the band’s new album Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1… hopefully this is a sign that all is well. I’m not sure if I’ll be at Sundance this year myself, but I can’t wait to find out what the story is behind this short film.
