Last we heard, Guy Ritchie was in the process of freeing up his schedule to focus completely on Sherlock Holmes 2, but it appears that Warner Brothers loves the guy so much that they simply can’t help throwing more cool projects his way. Pajiba received a tip this week indicating that Ritchie is interested in getting away from all the crime flicks to take on something a little more fantastical. Something like… a new take on Excalibur perhaps?
Unlike Bryan Singer’s previously announced remake of John Boorman’s 1981 film Excalibur (which is also at Warner Brothers), Ritchie is reportedly in talks to direct a King Arthur movie based on a treatment by comic book writer Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Global Frequency). It’s being produced by Hollywood Gang (the same people who did 300), and as Ellis revealed on his blog, it “differs from the prior 751 King Arthur movies in many ways, but perhaps most obviously in that it is very specifically about the gathering of the Knights”. It seems strange that Warner Brothers would be developing two competing Excalibur films at the exact same time, but hey, weirder things have happened in Hollywood lately, right?
