Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins Trailer and DVD Release Date

scoobydoomysterybegins

Growing up I was a huge fan of Scooby-Doo, and as you can probably guess, I despised the 2002 live action adaptation starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Matthew Lillard. I didn’t bother seeing the sequel, and quietly hoped that the franchise would simply die… unfortunately those hopes were dashed when I heard that there were also doing a third Scooby-Doo movie as a direct-to-DVD prequel with an entirely new cast!

Theoretically, a new cast could have been an improvement on the first two flicks, but after seeing the trailer for this thing it’s clear that it’s going to be worse. MUCH worse. Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins stars virtual unknowns Robbie Amell, Nick Palatas, Kate Melton, and Hayley Kiyoko, with Scooby himself being voiced by Frank Welker. Director Brian Levant previously helmed The Flintstones and its sequel The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, which technically should make him the perfect guy to adapt another Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Unfortunately if you’ve seen either of those films, you know nothing could be farther from the truth. Scooby Doo! The Mystery Begins hits DVD on September 22nd, and will air on Cartoon Network sometime prior to that. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Not surprised that something with good film potential is ruined by somebody in it for a quick buck. “Good enough!” says the director as the check is handed over to him. They’ve stopped trying.

  • Captain N

Scooby looks more like his cartoon version in this as opposed to the other two movies. Not that that means anything. Its a direct to DVD kids movie. I am sure kids will like it.

I thought it was supposed to be based off of the early 90′s Scooby Doo where he was a puppy and the whole gang were kids.

Well i don’t understand how you guys could look at the awesome artwork and the trailer and not be excited. When you see those things you don’t like about the new cast, if you’re a real fan you will be able to look past it and see the much better in the movie (like i did.)So guys if you don’t like the idea Scooby Doo! the Mystery Begins, just keep it to yourself

  • Tomas

Hey, “im jesse”, if you don’t like it that other fans are disappointed by shite like this, then that is too bad. If you standards are that low, I’ve got a polished turd you may like to see.

How can the gang “begin” in 2009?

“So guys if you don’t like the idea Scooby Doo! the Mystery Begins, just keep it to yourself”

I love comments like this. Fragile fans who don’t want anything bad said about their favorite franchise. Can we also ask that you keep your positive comments to yourself?

I think this looks FUCKIN’ ACES!! I like that it almost feels like a reboot of the series ala BATMAN BEGINS. It feels much DARKER in tone than the original films. Also, how did they get BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD for DAPHNE!? Good score on the producers part. Hopefully she brings the much-needed depth to the character that the cartoons always implied was there.

I also hope they delve more deeply into SHAGGY’s troubled home life and his horribly abusive father forcing him to sleep in that van all the time. His drug problems are also a gold mine for some solid dramatic effect. The pseudo-lesbian relationship between Daphne and Velma and the confused sexuality of FRED should play really nicely into the group dynamic as well.

This looks great! All the haters can EAT SHIT! Just because you fuckers don’t understand the subtle character nuance that the trailer so blatantly puts forth doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just means you’re stupid!

Riiiiiighhhhhhtt. I’m guessing you are all of maybe 12 years old? Maybe that is why you are so impressed. Now get back to your hidden porn stash little man.

I’d rather watch the original cartoons that I viewed when I was a kid, because this movie is coming off badly. Horribly miscast, CGI that is much too obvious to the rest of the setting. They need to up the ante with quality. This is probably better than the Buffy/Prinze Jr. atrocities story wise, but it is still falling short.

    He was being sarcastic Tomas.

  • Tomas

Swarez: I wasn’t going to take any chances. I don’t know FatBolonga from im jesse. Some fans are that rabid when it comes to certain brands.

  • Fatbologna

Swarez unnastands me…sarcasm is sarcasticness…I forgot that it don’t carry so goods on the innernetz.

I’ve got a polished turd you may like to see.

    Hilarious.

  • J.

I don’t know if I’m more disturbed by Velma’s rack in the slow motion walking scene or that horrible impression of Shaggy. Plus, now I know what Scooby-Doo! Movies have been missing all these years: Explosions!

  • J.

    And may I add,

    Jinkies!

  • Tomas

Velma is kind of hot, now that you mention it, J.

  • Satisfied

I’m very happy that they decided to shoot Robbie Amell as Fred. He is amazing in everything he does.
    I love you Robbie =]

  • Fabrizzio

hey, Daphne is not played by BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD, it will be great, that but is not, other awesome it will be Bryce playin poison avy in batman

“Fragile fans who don’t want anything bad said about their favorite franchise”

That can go both ways. Idiotic losers who bash others because they said they like something they hate.

  • i am dolly partonb again blow a bubble lalalalala

You know what guys. Jesus loves all of you.

  • realist

wow, this looks TERRIBLE from the ads on CN! First, Fred is not blonde ? WTF? Then, the HORRIBLE shaggy impersonation….. how did that guy score the part with that half-ass impression ? Velma looks too hot. Fred is too douchey. And the Scooby CGI looks like it was done 15 years ago on an Amiga 500. Mind you, the Amiga 500 kicked ass, but not for a 2009 feature length film staple!

Like someonee said, the producer apparently is just cashing it in and calling it “good enough”. Essentially giving up.
