The Movie Club Podcast #12: My Own Private Idaho and 10 Things I Hate About You

The Movie Club Podcast is a monthly roundtable podcast where we select two movies to dissect, analyze and discuss with a group of fellow movie bloggers and film fans.

It took a while, but we finally got around to recording the next episode of The Movie Club Podcast. This time we tackled a duo of films loosely based on the works of William Shakespeare. 10 Things I Hate About You starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles was selected in the previous month’s poll by listeners like you. We decided to pair it up with Gus Van Sant’s independent hit My Own Private Idaho starring Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix.

You can listen to the episode now via the link below. Be sure to leave your own comments on these films over at MovieClubPodcast.com. Next month’s viewing assignment will be The Alien Quadrilogy… yes even Alien: Resurrection. Why not get a head start and start rewatching them now?

For some reason the movies that get picked for the Movie Club Podcast just never are my cup of tea, but I’ll definitely check out the next one!

  • Not your cup of tea? The selection there over the past 10 months or so is pretty diverse. Maybe we should focus on older, classic films? Also make sure you vote in the side bar – maybe something there is more to your liking.

Have you seen Private Idaho or Ten Things? The point of a book club is to read books you may not have otherwise and then discuss them. It’s okay not to like the movies. In fact, that’s part of the fun of the discussion.

Indeed. It’s going to be a looong episode next time.

I’ve seen about half of the movies and of those I was looking forward to the Lady in the Water debate. I don’t hate the other ones I’ve seen, they just didn’t leave a very big impression. If there were some of my favorite movies on the list I’d be more inclined to check out the other ones, but it looks like I have a different taste in movies than you guys.

  • For some reason the Movie Club site isn’t working for me. It appears for about ten seconds, and then it “breaks down” and a Google search page takes it’s place. I managed to click on the link fast enough to make a comment on there, but now I can’t go back and view other comments, and I really want to check the archive. This is my first MC podcast and I’d love to see what else you guys have done in the past.

  • I know you have the next episode decided, but somewhere down the road can you consider these for Movie Club, please?

    -Moulin Rouge (or anything Baz)
-Children of Men (or anything Alfonso)

Thanks guys, keep up the great work! ;)

    I also have some suggestions:
    – Straw Dogs
    – Angel Heart
    – Blue Velvet (or anything else by David Lynch)
    – Leon / The Professional
    – Munich
    – Miami Vice
    – Memento

  • swarez

    Very good suggestions Bas.

  • Angel Heart would certainly be fun. I think we do best at the podcast when we are chewing on B-style culty flicks over the more mainstream or arty flicks. Seems to be more of the sensibility of the group.

  • (On David Lynch. I’d love to do DUNE)

I realise it probably isn’t easy picking these movies – if they’re too mainstream there’s not much left to argue that you haven’t heard before and if they are loved or hated by ALL the people in the discussion it falls flat very quickly. That’s why I hope at least one of you guys has something positive to say about Alien: Ressurection :) I think it least has a very good visual style, a great and very tense underwater sequence and a cool role for Ron Perlman!

How can anybody review a film they admit to not having watched da capo al fine?!…
