While it’s not too surprising to hear that an upcoming comedy about spring break partying will be going direct-to-DVD sometime next year, what makes it a little bit surprising in this case, is the fact that the movie also stars Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, and Rachel Dratch, along with Will Arnett, Amber Tamblyn and Jane Lynch. Ryan Shiraki’s Spring Breakdown seems like the kind of movie that National Lampoon puts out every other week, but instead of centering on a bunch of nerdy guys trying to get laid, it’s about three nerdy women in their 30’s trying to get laid.
Apparently the release of this movie was partially dependent on how well Amy Poehler’s previous film Baby Mama performed; strangely, that movie actually did reasonably well and yet Warner Brothers still doesn’t want to bother releasing Spring Breakdown in theatres. There’s a good chance that may say something about the quality of the film. Director Ryan Shiraki’s previous credits consist only of another frat comedy called Freshman Orientation (Dratch had a small role in that as well, and co-wrote this film). Personally I didn’t find the trailer all that amazing, but I’m sure I’ve seen much worse stuff released theatrically. Spring Breakdown will hit stores sometime in 2009; check out the trailer below.
