The Ricky Gervais Show To Become Animated Series in the U.S.

Exciting news this week for fans of British comedian Ricky Gervais and his podcasting pals Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington! As you may know, a couple of months ago the trio released Season 5 of The Ricky Gervais Show, which was believed to be their final series of recordings EVER. Well now it appears that they will indeed continue recording podcasts, except that from here on in they will be called “audiobooks”, and they will each focus on a specific subject (the first will be on evolution).

What’s even more interesting, however, is that according to a recent post on Ricky’s blog, the audiobooks are now going to be turned into an animated series that will air on American TV! I have no idea what that means exactly, but as Matt from Obsessed With Film points out, it may have been inspired by the multitude of fan-made animations floating around YouTube. I’m picturing something a bit like Creature Comforts or Crank Yankers, I suppose, I just hope they add more visuals than cartoon versions of Ricky, Steve and Karl talking. In other news, it looks like there will be another Extras special sometime next year, with Al Pacino, Danny DeVito and Michael Douglas possibly having cameos. All this, plus their upcoming movies and stand up tours… it’s looking like 2009 is going to be a packed year for Gervais and Co.

I think it’ll be a combination of “Dr Katz” type talking heads with the Comedy Central animated shorts style of cutaways about what they’re talking about… they took short bits from Patton Oswalt, Dane Cook, Mitch Hedberg and others and animated their story based material. I think the podcasts would fit that.
