New Planet of the Apes Prequel in Development?

Although I’m a big fan of Tim Burton, I have to admit that his re-envisioning of Planet of the Apes could very well be one of the worst remakes ever perpetrated on cinema. 20th Century Fox supposedly had big plans for the franchise, but after the first one was so reviled across the board, they never even bothered trying to go any further with it. I guess it’s a little bit surprising considering that the fan base is pretty huge, and would likely still show up if they could find a director to do things right (Tim Burton’s flick still grossed $360 million worldwide).

Well, it looks like there’s a chance that we could eventually be getting another Planet of the Apes movie after all. CHUD caught wind of a new Apes prequel that is being talked about at Fox by the name of Genesis: Apes. It’s a script that was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (The Relic), and is essentially a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, telling the story of Caesar, the first ape who stood up to human slavery and eventually lead a widespread revolt that resulted in the apes seizing power on Earth. Whether or not this actually has a shot at getting greenlit is still unclear, but I think it’s safe to say that Tim Burton and Mark Wahlberg wouldn’t have anything to do with it. That alone might be enough to convince fans that this is a project worth pursuing. Heck, I’d love to see it happen, but from the sound of it, the script is just a little too smart and hits too close to home in these politically-charged times. Apparently people don’t want politics in their genre movies anymore, which is just a sad statement indeed.

tim burton died to me after his POTA…and he died a second death after CATCF.

And dont go giving me that BIG FISH bullshit, yes it’s a good movie, but its not great…it’s mearly the illtalented demon, who possessed him right before production of POTA, inside Burton’s corpse trying its best.

  • I thought Genesis: Apes was some sort of movie about creationism.

  • Conquest is without a doubt the best of all the sequels. Maybe they can get Ricardo Montalban to reprise his role.

I would love someone pull off a better one than TB, I was soo disapointed with that flick.

Since the post before this Ricardo has passed on. I would think it would better if they redid Escape from the Planet of the Apes.

Lets hope they entertain this time.

I did not think the TB version was awful, but no one can beat CH in his role. I would love to see a Conquest remake!

Tim Burtons Planet of the Apes wasn’t too bad until the end, not great but somewhat entertaining. When I first watched that ending, it ruined the whole movie. The ending made no sense in the context of the movie. It’s like he took an idea for an ending, trying to match the original apes ending, with no thought as to it fitting into the movie and making sense. If the idea was to let the movie goer make there own interpretation,(and there are many out there) it failed on that level too. Has to be one of the worst, if not the worst endings of any movie I’ve ever watched. Absolutely unforgiveable! I could go on and on but I think I’ve made my point.

Tim Burton destroyed the planet of the apes as he did willy wonka!!!! I pray they do not let him near the new one!!!!!

  • Dermot Byrne

Mark Walberg was no way as good as Charlton Heaston and the end of the Movie ruined it but it did have its good Moments.Lets hope Rise of the Apes is closer to the Original Movies.
