Star Wars Coming Back To Theatres in 3D

Oh dear… it looks like George is at it again. The man who just can’t leave his movies alone, despite the increasing ire of fans, has decided to go back and tinker with the original trilogy one more time. This time it’s not to make Greedo shoot first, but rather to prep the movies for a theatrical re-release in 3D! My understanding is that this is not just an Imax thing, but rather something that will be seen in regular theatres complete with those funny glasses for the audience. The only movie I can think of in recent years that was released in 3D was the tepid Spy Kids 3D: Game Over. I don’t think this is new technology by any means, but I suppose George has to find some way to keep all those effects people employed now that the prequel trilogy is done! Rumour has it that new 3D versions of a few other blockbusters are in the works, including possibly the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Titanic. Robert Rodriguez is also supposedly producing The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl in 3D. In the past, 3D has proven itself to be nothing more than a cheesy gimmick, and I’m very doubtful that old movies (not originally intended for 3D, mind you) can be significantly enhanced by this technology. George, can we please just move on already??

i love star wars as well, the originals that is. i think that george should leave the series be and try his hand at something fresh, like the new Indy movie. give it up mister lucas, you can only do star wars so many times. if he is so hell bent on staying with the series, do a flick on the happenings of after return of the jedi.

  • Oops, as Jay just pointed out to me, Shark Boy and Lavagirl was already in 3D when it originally came out. I must have also been reading an older article about this 3D trend.

Fuck Star Wars 3-D. I’ll hold out for Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure in 3-D to wear those stupid ass glasses. On a related note, Superman Returns will be shown on IMAX 3-D screens and Bryan Singer says that visual effects and action sequences won’t be the only shots with 3-D elements. Maybe there’ll be 3-D smootching, or if we’re really lucky some Ma Kent brewing tea…IN 3-D!!!

  • I’ll be happy as long as I get to experience the full girth of Brandon Routh’s package in 3-D!

    Amen brother. Amen!
